Insurance rules restrict medication for opioid dependence, OHSU study finds

Doctors must increasingly jump through insurance hoops to prescribe a drug to treat opioid use disorder, according to a new study from Oregon Health & Science University.

Researchers from OHSU and the OHSU/Oregon State University College of Pharmacy analyzed publicly available files from the Medicare Part D prescription drug plan. Specifically, they looked at the rate of pre-authorization requirements, a common tool insurance plans use to manage costs.
