New York personnel and company announcements: Oct. 19, 2016


XL Catlin has formed the Global Mergers and Acquisitions Insurance Division and appointed Brian Benjamin as Global Head to lead the effort, based in New York. His initial focus will be on hiring underwriting teams in New York and around the globe. Benjamin was most recently AIG‘s Management Liability and Financial Institutions Officer. In addition, XL Catlin has added Paul Vogler as an underwriting specialist in the marine field, serving New York and the Northeast, and based out of the firm’s Summit, N.J., office.

Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty announced that Adam Posner has been named senior underwriter for Terrorism & Political Violence insurance, to be based in New York. He joins from XL Catlin.

GEICO has named Rick Hoagland vice president of its New York regional operations, based out of Woodbury, N.J. Hoagland joined GEICO in 1994, and most recently served as regional vice president at GEICO’s Buffalo regional office, where he oversaw insurance operations for New England states and New Jersey. In Woodbury, Hoagland succeeds John Pham, who was named vice president of GEICO’s Virginia Beach region and the company’s military, motorcycle and recreational vehicles division.

VALE Insurance Partners, a New York City-based managing general agency focused on specialty property/casualty insurance, has hired Lidore Alexandra DeRose as vice president and underwriter. In her new role, DeRose will join VALE’s transactional risk team and focus on underwriting and marketing the firm’s rep and warranty insurance products. Prior to joining VALE, DeRose served as senior underwriting counsel at Concord Specialty Risk. Before that, she practiced law for 10 years as a corporate attorney at Kirkland & Ellis and DLA Piper.

New York Life has named Pedram Afshar senior vice president and head of service for the company’s Insurance and Agency Group, based in New York. Afshar joins New York Life from Best Buy, where he was vice president responsible for the company’s enterprise customer experience operation. Prior to Best Buy, he held senior roles in customer experience areas of Capital One and American Century Investments.

New York City-based Marsh said it has appointed David Hewett U.S. contract surety leader. Hewett joins from XL Catlin, where he served as president of surety.

Chubb has promoted Raimund Navakas to executive vice president of its Overseas General Insurance division based in New York. In this role, Navakas will continue to lead the division’s risk engineering practice and will be responsible for supporting the international property and casualty business. Prior to ACE’s acquisition of Chubb in January 2016, Navakas relocated from Australia to the U.S. to serve as senior vice president of global property engineering at the firm. He originally joined ACE in 2009 in its Sydney office.

New York City-based homeowners and rental insurance company Lemonade said it has appointed John Peters chief underwriting officer. He joins from Liberty Mutual, where he served as executive vice president, commercial insurance operations.

The Church Pension Group (CPG), a New York-based financial services organization that serves Episcopal Church institutions, announced the appointment of William “Bill” F. Murray as Senior Vice President and General Manager of The Church Insurance Companies (CIC). Murray will replace Rod Webster, current Senior Vice President and General Manager of CIC, who recently announced his intention to retire. Prior to CPG, Murray served as Chief Underwriting Officer, Casualty/Public Risk, of Houston Casualty Company.

Allied World Assurance Company Holdings appointed Marc Berner to the North American Public Directors & Officers underwriting team, based in New York, in the role of Vice President, Public and Private Financial Institutions, D&O. Berner was most recently Department Head, Financial Services Division at Hartford Financial Products. Prior to that, he was Vice President, Financial Institutions Division, at Axis Insurance. Berner is a graduate of State University of New York in Binghamton, NY, and received his J.D. from Albany Law School of Union University.
